Concept and qualifications of the degree
Studying sociology as a one subject minor is designed to gurantee a fundational and more focused teaching in the subject of sociology. Students will be able to historically and internationally analyse the social reality concerning modern society. Additionally students will be taught about current sociological theories and their development, standard quantitative and qualitative methods of sociological research as well as more focused knowledge on different main areas of study at the institute. Other skills in scientific reflection, argumentation and communication are also important and are being taught.
As the study of sociology is a professionally qualifying degree following job opportunities are possible:
- market- and opinion-based-research, marketing and public work
- working in human resources, the social sector, planning and the cultural management at companies, administration, unions and religious institutions
- journalism
- spokesperson working for political parties, parlaments, fraction or politicians
- consulting for organisations, companies or politics
- educating adults and further professional training
Career paths and profiles are still being formed so there is a big fokus on creating multifunctional competences, communication and reflectional skills.
You have to, following § 29 ABMStPO/Phil, proof your proficiency in at least two foreign languages to the examinations office. This has to be done before you reach your fourth semester. Your high school diploma (language proficiency for at least 3 consecutive school years with at least a grade D) or through language courses at level UNIcert I.
